Valtrex (generic name: Valaciclovir/Valacyclovir; brand name: Zelitrex) is an antiviral medicine that targets herpes infections, including herpes zoster (shingles), genital herpes, and herpes cold sores on the face and lips.
Valtrex disrupts the process by which the herpes virus reproduces itself and spreads to other cells in the body. This helps to keep the virus inactive.
Valtrex is a one-day oral treatment proven to speed the healing and shorten the pain and discomfort of cold sores.
Once-daily Valtrex, along with safer sex practices, has also been proven to reduce the risk of spreading genital herpes to a partner.
Valtrex is widely used in the treatment of shingles. Valtrex is proven to speed healing, reduce the pain, and keep new blisters from forming. Valtrex works in the body to help stop the varicella-zoster virus from multiplying.
Valtrex is non-addictive.
