Yaz (generic name: drospirenone / ethinyl estradiol) is a combination birth control pill.
Yaz is indicated for the prevention of pregnancy in women who elect to use an oral contraceptive. Yaz is also indicated for the treatment of symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) in women who choose to use an oral contraceptive as their method of contraception.
Yaz is also indicated for the treatment of moderate acne vulgaris in women at least 14 years of age, who have no known contraindications to oral contraceptive therapy and have achieved menarche. Yaz should be used for the treatment of acne only if the patient desires an oral contraceptive for birth control.
Yaz is the only birth control proven to treat the emotional and physical symptoms of PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) that are severe enough to impact the lives of women who choose the Pill for contraception.
Yaz is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy, and is the only birth control Pill with a 24/4 dosing schedule (you take active pills for 24 days, followed by 4 inactive pills). This means that Yaz gives you 3 additional days, which helps your hormone levels stay even. Plus, Yaz has the unique hormone, drsp (drospirenone) - the preferred progestin of OB/Gyns.

Yaz has a 24/4-day design dosing schedule.
You take the pink, active Yaz pills (containing hormones) for 24 days in a row.
When the 24 pink active pills run out, you take the white, inactive pills (containing sugar or a placebo) for 4 days in a row.
You get your period during the time you take the inactive pills, just as you would with any other combination birth control pill. Your period may last into the beginning of your next pack of pills.
There are only pink (active) and white (inactive) pills in your pack. When you finish taking all the birth control pills in your pack, you start taking the pink pills in a new pack the very next day. There is never a day when you are not taking a Yaz pill so once you get into the routine, it's easy to remember to take your birth control pill at the same time every day.
